The goal of the trip was Greenwich, where we visited the National Maritime Museum with its beautiful ship scale models, and the Royal Observatory, a complex of red brick buildings housing scientific exhibitions. The exhibition about longitude is very interesting. You can see John Harrison’s clocks, their story and mechanism are fascinating.

Le but du voyage était Greenwich, où nous avons visité le Musée Maritime National avec ses belles maquettes de bateaux, et l’Observatoire Royal, un complexe de bâtiments de brique rouge qui abritent des expositions scientifiques. L’exposition sur la longitude est très intéressante. On peut y voir les horloges de John Harrison, leur histoire et leurs mécanismes sont fascinants.

On the roof of the main building, a red time ball marks 1pm everyday. At 12:55 the ball is raised half-way, gets to the top at about 12:58, then drops at 1pm. As the Observatory is on a hill above the Thames, it allowed the ships to set their clocks.

Sur le toit du bâtiment principal, une boule horaire rouge marque 13:00 tous les jours. À 12:55 la boule monte à mi-mât, arrive en haut à 12:58, puis tombe à 13:00. Comme l’Observatoire est sur une colline qui domine la Tamise, cela permettait aux bateaux de synchroniser leurs horloges.
